OK, so I'm taking a Justice Studies class and the professor had us watch a video where an Iraq Vet. says white phosphorus smoke was used in Fallujah to kill a bunch of civilians. He says W.P. can burn your skin and lungs in minutes but won't burn your clothes.

Everything I've looked at says W.P. is just used as a smoke screen or illumination but not a chemical weapon.

Any of you military guys have any information on this stuff?

WP grenades are "generally" used for concealment (smoke) and incendiary purposes, but the smoke is definiately not good to inhale, not to mention the flames.

I've never personally heard of or seen them used as an anti personnel weapon, and they are not listed as a chemical weapon, but I'm not sayin' thay haven't been used as such.

WP (Willey Peter, not Whiskey Pete) is used to provide instant smoke, as opposed to HC smoke, which takes seconds to build up. It has also been used as a marker. Our FACs (Forward Air Controlelrs) would put a WP rocket in target area, and then direct air strikes in reference to the smoke location. As far as burning you, but not your clothes- on what planet? It is a themal reaction- very hot, and yes, can set stuff on fire- but not it's main use. Incendiary weapons are MUCH hotter. Looks impressive when round bursts, but is not as effective a casualty producer as HE. WP WILL continue to burn a long as there is WP and oxygen, since it ignites at room temp. Put it under water, stops burning, water runs off, reignites. You have to get it off of you, or treat it with copper sulfate solution, which reacts with the WP, and kills it chemically.

WP smoke, BTW, is WHITE, and billows upwards very quickly (due to heat) and does not last long. Colored smoke (red, purple, yellow, green) is NOT WP. Used for screening or signaling. There is also HC smoke- white, non WP, used for screening.

In a former life, have shot a few tons of WP. Not good to breathe ANY smoke.

Hey, thats what the guy called it in the video.

I figured the guy was either lying or exaggerating in the video.
He made it sound like WP was rained down and the smoke alone killed everyone in the city.

Makes you wonder if this kind of BS is why so many professors seem to be hell bent on being anti-everything, liberal, baster.. or if they go looking for this kind of crap to support their views?

• I rate his two doctorates right up there with Obama's
