Where did that phrase come from......

Okay, let's educate each other on where certain phrases came from.

Here's mine......

"Drunk as a skunk"

Skunks are very susceptible to rabies. If you've ever seen a rabid skunk they stumble around, bump into things, and it general wander around looking as if they were extremely drunk. So when someone's had too much to drink and they are stumbling around and falling down......they look very much like a rabid skunk.......hence....."drunk as a skunk".

Anyone else?

APPLE OF MY EYE -This phrase comes from the Bible. In Psalm 17:8 the writer asks God 'keep me as the apple of your eye'.

Alan Harper (2 and a half men) explains the booty call to his son.

Now to topic: The phrase "cold turkey" comes from a term for making a dish without preparation. Hence quitting smoking with just stopping smoking (no patches, gum, inspirational tapes, etc.) is described as quitting "cold turkey".

You better watch your P's and Q's which means behavior yourself and watch what you say. It originated because people would drink too many pints and quarts of alcohol and cause problems.

Ampersand, the little '&' we use sometimes. In early America it was a letter used at the end of the alphabet to mean 'and'... A B C... X Y Z... 'And per se 'and'.' Kids started just saying ampersand, and the name eventually stuck.

The disgusting comparison of beautful woman to an out house goes back to the great Depression. FDR had all manner of civilian work programs. One of these was the WPA . These folks over spent time and money over doing everything to make their jobs last longer. FDRs WPA was replacing wooden toilets with new concret ones. WPA worker turned these projects into worthless castles. They were a joke a waste. The term in its day was not a compliment.:(

During the oppressive years of the early Puritan Church to question the church could get you beheaded. People who disagreed did so in secret. When they passed each other in public they would whisper "God Go By" or God go away. In time this became "Goodbye" when departing from a friend.:)

no room to swing a cat
During punishment all hands were called on deck to bear witness. In the case of a ship with a full complement on board this could make for a very crowded deck. In fact the deck could be so crowded that a cat o' nine tails could not be used without hitting the observers so that there was no room to swing a cat.
