John Wayne or Clint would not have done it.

Open Range with Kevin Kosner and Robert Duvall is very good.

Got two more that I have in my DVD collection; "A Man Called Horse" .... Richard Harris overacting as usual, but a good movie never the less... and "Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway and Richard Mulligan as the BEST George Armstrong Custer outside of Errol Flynn..... speaking of which... Throw "They Died with their Boots On" into this mix also.

Jeremiah Johnson, one of the best movies ever made, of any genre, and I'm not especially a Redford fan. Also, any western with Ben Johnson in it, a real cowboy first, unlike most of the pretty boys dressed up like one!
