My parents taught me,

DUTY: Always do your duty to God, to your country, family, community, employer, employees, friends, and to yourself.

HONOR: If you first consider honor as your guiding principle in all things, you will never have anything to be ashamed of. An honorable man does the right thing even if no one else is watching, and even if no one will ever know he did it, or give him credit for it.

COUNTRY: You're an American. Conduct yourself as an American at all times. Stand up for America. Serve her in the military. Salute and honor the flag. And if necessary, stand willing and ready to give your life for America. Never dishonor America, either by your actions, or by your inaction.

My folks were starry-eyed idealists. But both of them died with a peaceful and happy smile on their faces. They died knowing they had done their best.

Many other lessons as well, but these cover almost everything for a life well lived.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

From my Dad "never give up if someone knocks you down get back and keep getting back up, sooner or later he'll get tired and then he's yours".
Apparently Dad wasn't big on diplomacy!
