What are the different types of finishes?
I tried googling, but it did not yield exactly what I wanted. I want to know every kind of finish for a gun. Here are the ones I know of:
rust (for like a 1700's rifle or musket)
Are there any others?
There's also browning. It's quite similar to bluing in that it's a controlled form of oxidation-like controlled rusting. The rust you refer to in the old days is actually browning. I'm assuming you don't want to include chrome or nickel plating or the different coatings available now days.
Add spray-on or painted, and plating (like nickel)
Hard Chrome Plate (matte, brush, bright),
Nickel Colbalt Chrome Plate (matte, brush, bright),
Nickel Chrome Plating (matte, brush, bright),
Black Chrome Plating (matte, brush, bright),
Electroless Nickel Boron Nitride,
24k Gold Plating,
Melonite (Salt-bath nitrocarburizing),
Tenifer (Ferritic nitrocarburizing),
Salt Bluing (also known as hot blue, caustic blue or black oxide),
Damascus Rust Bluing,
Slow Rust Bluing,
Color Case Harding,
Charcoal Case Harding,
Flame and induction hardening,
Anodizing (aluminum only),
Engraving / Laser Etching,
and probably a 1,000 more I've missed!
Good god cane!!!!!! Thank you for spending all of that time to type that up for me!!!
Wow Cane! Did you type all that from memory? I was just talking about generalizations but I'm impressed!
