Default What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Holy cats. I just watched this brief video showing how NASA's new Mars Curiosity rover will attempt to land tomorrow (or Saturday, depending where you are). Check it out:

http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/multimedia/video-view.cfm?Vid_ID=1642

It makes sense, I guess. But I gotta wonder if there maybe isn't a simpler means to get on the ground in one piece.

Keep your fingers, toes and eyes crossed that this puppy makes it down OK.

Hopefully they remembered to make sure everyone used the same form of measurments for the telemetry systems this time…

didn't NASA already land 2 other rovers on Mars ..... with a whole lot less complication

hope it's successful but it seems to be over engineered in my opinion

The first Rovers were like a micro wave. Opportunity & Spirit are refrigerator sized. This one is a dune buggy, . . with a back hoe.

i bet it cost us 10million in tax to make that video...

shoulda outsourced it to private corporations. private industry prolly could have figured out how to get something the size of a london double decker bus to mars, run it around for a couple months and bring all the samples back to earth in a quarter of the time at a third of the cost.

I have always been amazed & awed by what NASA has done but I also think it's time to start letting the private sector do more & more of this exploration. Not as in government backed private stuff that has a tendency to happen but true private stuff.

this effort reminds me of the failed attempt by NASA to catch a returning probe with a helicopter a few years back

just questioning the sense of putting all their eggs in one basket

Actually the unmanned projects are done relatively cheaply for the amount of scientific payoff they return. And at a price it would be hard for a private company to beat.

It’s the manned missions that are not ‘cost effective’. When you put people in space it becomes first, and above all else, a round trip survival mission. If the mission can increase the knowledge base, well that’s nice too.
