Sorry if I am a little harsh. When the big kick off started. I got forced out of my barracks and was told oh well you have to live off post. I had to pay $1500 per month to live in some creepy womens spare bedroom. That is on top of car payment child support. That was also 35 miles from post. So I had a 45 minute to 1 hour commute because 75% of the guard units were all broke from doing what NOTHING. I didn't have much money to live on after paying my bills.
I put in paperwork to go to Iraq I don't know how many times. Every time denied then they send the biggest douche bag in the unit over. Only difference was I was white he was black.
I never said I didn't respect the ones that went and served. Just that more of them faked injuries and got away with it. When many of us had to hide injuries just to say in for as long as we did.

While I did not serve I gave my sons
Oldest 8 years Army 4 tours Iraq, 1 Afghanistan (he felt that the soldiers with family's should be allowed to go home for the holidays so he stayed/went instead.
Middle son 4 years Marine, 1 tour Iraq
Youngest son currently works for the Air Force as a civilian in Emergency Management (if your plan crashes he will be there to pick up the pieces.) He is also considering joining right know because I would not let him while his brothers were in because it was bad enough having two in Iraq st the same time.
Kudos to all you who have served, are serving or will serve.

My experience with the MING was the same as Tango's Guard issues. I was the bad kid. I came from the 82d Airborne, a 22 year old E-5 and a few folks didn't like it. I earned my rank, busting my ass, too freaking bad for them.
Iraqi war goes, the first one, and our unit is going to be activated. They send a 'representative group' to Lansing for PT and common task testing. We were all prior RA and passed with ease. They called the rest of the unit and the doctors CANCELED the PT test because of the outward physical condition of the members in the unit. That is pathetic.
The solution, send the helicopters, leave the people. What a joke. The NG was a huge mistake for me. I fulfilled my contract, I committed and completed, but it was a waste of time.
