Read the op people.
If you say a rifle is more versatile than a shotgun your a bit off. They definitely have their places but a shotgun is far more versatile.

a shotgun can be more versatile for a do it all firearm. slugs, buckshot and bird shot. most any type of hunting using the proper ammo and barrel plus the proper choke. can be used for SD as well.

if only could have one firearm, i would have to go with a shotgun due to it's being so versatile a firearm.

From a VERSATILITY point of view- shotgun- which can be used for anything from Bob White Quail to Black Bear. Yes, a rifle can do things a shotgun cannot, but a shotgun can do more things than a rifle.

My pick would be a 12 g pump. Something like these.

And yes, those are military issue shotguns. They serve a purpose, and do it very well.

I love rifles, but I have to agree with the majority here.
I believe the shotgun is much more versatile than a rifle for the simple fact that the shotgun can be used to hunt a much wider and larger selection of game animals without needing different rifle cartridges for different game, for instance you don't want to take a 22lr deer or bear hunting or a 7mm rem mag squirrel or rabbit hunting
But with a shotgun along with the correct load and choke it will cover many more hunting situations than the rifle. jmo

Again I really enjoy my rifles but I was raised on shotguns and bird dogs.
