VW Jetta TDI, anyone have one?

I found a 02 Jetta TDI with 75k on it but it needs a tranny. It's an auto now and they're junk so I would convert it to a 5 speed. I'm looking for some real world experience with these. Anyone here have/had one? What were your thoughts on it?

I can get the thing really cheap and would come out way ahead so I could always just sell it but more then doubling my wife's mileage on her 45 minute drive to work would be nice and save us some considerable money.

My old boss has one, an 05' model, loves it! He was getting 45 mpg to work and he did not drive slow both city and highway combined!

I have a 2002 1.8T VW GTI, average in the city is 25 mpg on premium gas with my driving habits. They had a older VW Jetta TDI wagin for sale; but, my HOA is a pain.

My sister has an 05 and they get 53 mpg when they come down from PA. They have nothing but good things to say about it, I just wanted some more thoughts.

Thanks for the info and the links.

My diesel mechanic BIL (redder neck than me) bought my sister a 2006 model in 2007 (took that long to get it on order  ), and they have been very happy with it. She gets around town/county fuel economy in the low 40 range. They have had no major repairs.

Go for it. I know two people with them and have nothing but good things to say. Can't beat diesel reliability and efficiency.

My brother has a '02 and my dad has an '07 I think. They both love them. The gas mileage is almost unbelievable if I hadn't driven it myself for a few days. They're great.
