I've always been a fan of "world war z" by max brooks. The book is eerily realistic. Mr brooks really thought it out well...
"day by day Armageddon" (another book) was pretty good, not great, but worth the read.

"American apocalypse" (book also) is a fresh take, focusing on economic collapse as the harbinger instead of zombies. And that was cool, but by book 2 it gets a little... Fantastic? (as in unbelievable fantasy....)

Movie-wise, I haven't seen a good one since "book of Eli" and "contagion" both which crap out in the third act...

"Carriers" was pretty good for a movie that went straight to DVD.

Any list like this should include Omega Man one of the original versions of I am Legend, with Charlton Heston. Great movie. I believe there was another version of this movie in addition to the Will Smith I am Legend as well.

Omega man is cool though. And since Heston is in the brain; how about the original Planet of the Apes!!
