Default Trees for Vikingdad.......

I finally remembered to stop and take a pictures of those trees for you. These are the "flat trees" we were talking about a while ago. I forgot what you called them. I took various angles of pictures for you. They are not intertwined in a fence like I thought. It looks like the lower branches are wired to posts and the top ones just are aligned with no form of support. These leaf out every year. Maybe I'll get pictures of them later this season when they are fully leafed out. They are also very adorned with Christmas lights in the winter. Each tree has it's own color lights. I don't know what kind of trees they are and I can't remember if I've seen them flowering in the Spring.

Once saw a 300 acre commercial apple orchard that was trying the espalier system. Trees pruned to grow flat, two main branches each side of trunk, wires thru the upper branches, second wire lower branches, with drip irrigation tube on bottom wire.

The got less fruit per tree, but more trees per acre, harvest was faster, spraying trees was a breeze.

They look like crepe myrtles that have been meticulously pruned. You can do quite a bit with them, I have seen them look like a bush or a tree. We have 4 of them in our yard that I prune every year but not to that degree.

I'll have to keep an eye on them and see if they bloom. I haven't noticed any fruit on them over the years. But they have always caught my eye as long as I lived here. I was actually in their driveway taking pictures of those trees. I was hoping they wouldn't shoot at me. LOL Their driveway is fairly long and I'll bet I'm not the first one to stop and take pictures.

Thanks Winds! When they leaf out they look like they make a great driveway screen for them. And yes, that would be espalier, though some people (horticultural fanboys) would say that the branches should be parallel to the ground at at more or less right angles to the trunk, but true espalier is just flat, which these are. That would make a nice barrier around a garden if done right. I can see doing it with a variety of fruit trees and letting them get to be no more than 8 feet tall. The deer would keep them pruned on the outside of the garden and the gardener would take care of the inside. It would make a much prettier "fence" than one made out of milled lumber or wire. Here is a good gate to use for this garden, though I would make it taller.

I am now thinking of getting a couple of Kiwis (you need to have a male and a female in order for them to produce fruit) and then planting them closely together then making them into an espalier where the male/female plants will be intertwined. They would also be in a large pot so that I can move them around if need be.

Looks like tree BDSM to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
