Is 'The Horse Soldiers' a western? Or is it 'only' a civil war movie?

I know that I will be called a hieratic but in my book all John Wayne ever did was play the same part over and over again. He came off the same way in every movie he made with no variation in character. He made a career out of just playing John Wayne. His only exception to this persona was in the Quiet Man.
So does Eastwood, but some of the movies were still great.

My Favorite All-Time Western is...Elvis Presley as Jesse Wade. That's right Charro!! With Vengeance on his hip.

That's it. Can you dig it?

Followed by Flaming Star

That's right...THE KING.

Then, Love Me Tender

Dang, He was the KING!!

Shi, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the King has left the building.

That movie is great, but just quite doesn't make my top 5.

Was "The Big Country" the one with Gregory Peck as a sea captain who came west or something like that? I remember a duel with Chuck Connors that was classic. But I was about 10 when I saw that on TV and I'm embarrassed to say how long ago that was.

Man, it's tough to pare it down to just five.
1. Unforgiven
2. The Mountain Men
3. The Missouri Breaks
4. Joe Kidd
5. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
I'm not sure those are my top 5, there are so many good ones but most of these hadn't been mentioned and they're all great.

That's the one. Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, Chuck Connors, and one of the best scores of any movie ever made.
