I agree with this. The best example for my own life is as follows.

My first duty station was Okinawa. I ended up hating my time over there. But because I was on island for so long, I chose to take leave back to the States at a certain time. I met my wife while I was on leave at that time.

I am convinced that, had I been stationed in the States instead of Okinawa, going back home on leave wouldn't have been as big a deal. So I likely wouldn't have met my wife.

And yes, Okinawa was essentially my choice.

I would not have moved to Virginia when I was 19 years old. When I got there I could not find a job. I ended up being homeless for 4 months. Part of it was in the winter with snow on the ground. I learned a lot about how much I could survive.

I would not have backed into that lever in the Tardis with the Doctor still outside. Now I have no idea of getting back to my real time.

I would have gone to college first and then joined the Navy.

A number of officers wanted me to go to college to become an officer, but I was not interested in schooling at that point in my life.

I had (have) very little interest in telling people what to do apart from getting jobs done, but it would have opened more doors and lead to more interesting assignments and I might have made the Navy a career.

That said, I wanted to see the world (even got to see places I never want to see again) and I wanted to learn a trade and the Navy taught me that. I learned communications/computer systems administration and programming there and I've lead a very comfortable life afterwards as a result of the things they taught me (mostly application of a healthy amount of elbow grease and attention to detail).

All those experiences have made me who I am today. I LOVE my life! Some minor stuff I'd change, often wish I hadn't married my first wife, but without that experience, I wouldn't be with the most wonderful woman in the world.

I would return to my freshman year in High School and prevent my very first girlfriend from committing suicide.
