Ok, I guess yesterday's 'Survival Tip of the Day' was that hypothermia kills, so stay warm...oh yeah, and don't eat yellow snow...Both important things to remember.

So, it's 4:50 pm mountain time, and no one has posted a tip for today. I guess I will go agian...But it's someone else's turn tomorrow!!!

Survival Tip of the Day - 4/9/09
Cary a candle with you when in the back country. Even if you have matches that will light while wet, they will only burn for a VERY short time.

If you are in a wet environment, a match (or 10) won't burn long enough to dry out your kindling. However, even a small birthday candle will burn for 20 min. or so. That's enough time and heat to dry out a pile of kindling, and ignite it, which will in turn dry and ignite your firewood.

BUMP. Hello, "Is anyone out there?" -- pink floyd

No one on this forum has a better way to start a fire?

Come on people...I love to read/learn little tips like this, I'm sure many of you do too. If you have a survival tip, post it!

What if I sweeten the pot? How bout I say that when we reach tip # 100 (not post, but tip) we'll vote on the most valuable tip, and I will pay for that member/new member's membership for the next year?

How do you ignite this?

Are you talking about leaving a little cardboard sticking out like a wick?

Sounds like a good idea for a smal container, and would easily be incorportated into your pack/pocket/butt stock ammo thing/etc.

Ok, so far I count 4 Tips
1) The floating needle/compass (post #1)
2) Using your hand to count the hours of sunlight left (post #3)
3) Hypothermia Kills so get out of the wind. (post #20)
4) Take a candle with you to start fires (post #22)

I didn't count the "don't eat yellow snow" I think that falls under the common sense category, not the survival tip category; as does "the sun rising in the east", and the "moss grows on the north side of trees".

On second thought, I think that this new incentive warents a new thread. One that doesn't bore people with skullcrusher and I's arguing at the beginging, and since there wasn't any mention of a free membership until post #26.

I'll start a new thread, in the Survival thread, and post a link here.

Ok, here's the new thread: http://www.firearmstalk.com/forums/f51/free-membership-ftf-click-here-12748/

All future entries should be made in that thread.

Mods, Should we lock or delete this thread now? It's up to you.

I'll go first...

The Floating Needle/Compass...
Take a cup of water, drop a piece of bathroom tissue or other really absorbent material on the surface.

Before it gets waterlogged and sinks, drop a sewing needle (or other small piece of ferrous metal) on the piece of paper.

When the paper sinks (you may need to coach it to sink with a couple of twigs) surface tension of the water will allow the needle to float (as long as you don't get ANY water on top of the needle).

Free from friction, the needle will align it self in the N and S magnetic direction. The needle doesn't care which way it faces, so you have a 50/50 chance of guessing which way is North and which way is South, but it will give you a good reference point.
Hey, just passing through so sorry if this has been said already - I havn't read your whole thread.

As for the needle in water trick it does work, and better yet you can control which way it turns to point North, so your chances are not 50/50 but 100!

What you do is you hold the needle at one end with two fingers as lightly as you can. then you wipe a piece of wool or other cloth on the needle TOWARDS the tip that you are not holding. Wool is full of electric static so it will pull the electrons to that end of the needle. It is the electrons that try to magnetize by pointing to the North.

Remember only wipe the needle in one direction - if you rub back and forth you just pull them back and forth. Also keep in mind that like any compass it is sensitive to other metals around, so it you put a knife nearby it will point to it.

By the way - I have done this and it does work, but my memory is rusty so if someone can back me up with details that'd be great. But I do know that if you do this you can get the needle to point for CERTAIN in a certain direction and not 50/50 North/south.

and now to answer my own question:

my apologies, use silk instead of wool.

Hold the needle from the "eye" and rub one-way towards the tip. Be sure to get the silk off the end of the tip, then bring it back to the back of the needle and wipe it again from eye to tip.

If you are in the Northern hemisphere the tip will point south. If you are in the southern hemisphere the tip will point north.

Hope this helps!

That, or this is a thread that has been dead from frostbite for over a year and a half...does that help?
