The SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank on this day in 1975
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29. When launched on June 8, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there.

Sad Wreck, those lakes have taken allot of lives over the centuries. Unless you've seen them, you have no idea just how huge they are, small oceans is more like it and when the cold winds blow, it is treacherous to live near them. Im 70 miles from Lake Ontario but we get Lake Effect weather like were sitting right beside it.

The lakes are a great transportation corridor but they take their pounds of flesh as a toll for passage. God bless all those who make their living navigating them, they are some pretty brave Mariners!

Having been born and raised in the Great Lakes State (raised 8 miles from Saginaw Bay on L. Huron...and having spent my summers 4 miles from Union Bay on ole Gitche Gumee ) I know well how treacherous waters they can be. Absolutely GORGEOUS bodies of water...but NEVER let the beauty fool you. They can be UGLY. It takes no time at all for them to go from serene to wicked.

Remember well when the news of the Edmund Fitzgerald came down the wire that day.
