And what was all this business about the Olympic Torch?

You guys call a flashlight a torch, but for us a torch is a stick with clothing wrapped around it and set on fire.

Where did that come from?

I know you lot were big on setting fires to castles and such, but you can't actually set much of a fire to stone with a flashlight now can you? LOL
You are correct it originates from the first hand held light which of course was a torch.

Okay, here's the confusing bits of a Robbie Williams tune about growing up, and he keeps it totally British...

Explain

Nookie Brown

Skiving

Nick ( Is nicking stealing, or getting arrested?)

"Any room for a chancer?"

I assume a poof is a fairycake

How's that expression go? America and England...2 countries separated by a common language.

Having been married 3 days longer than dirt has existed- to a West Country lass from Cornwall, I will gladly attest that English and American are two different languages.

Now, don't go getting your knickers in a twist, I am no trying to get up your nose, but somehow, things just go astray. In between bonnets, boots and petrol for the autos, and tins, toad-in-the-hole, spotted dick, bangers-and-mash, tiffin, chips and biscuits in the kitchen, one is sometimes left with a HUH? sort of feeling.

It also extends to non-verbal communication. The hand with two upraised fingers, palm turned OUT, might be Churchill's V-for-Victory, but palm turned IN is an obscene gesture.

Now be a love and fetch us a Newcastle- I want to see if the match is on the telly.
