Does anyone here Skype? A friend wants me to sign up to Skype so we can chat. Pros? Cons? I don't have a video camera hooked up to my computer.

we use it all the time. My in laws live in Montreal, so it helps my wife to keep in touch with them, all internet based so no long distance bills and it's pretty much face to face...

It's a great tool!

It costs me about $40 a year plus overseas calls are very cheap/ About 3 cents a minute to Austria. My wife's twin sister lives on an island nation called Mauritius. They video skype for no additional charge. Phone company rates are very expensive to there. We video skype to our kids about 600 miles away at no additional charge. It also works on my cell phone using the data link instead of minutes so I can use the extremely low tolls for overseas calls. One thing that ticks off though it is all Euro based.

The wife uses it to talk to her relatives in Germany.
Saves me a bunch of money.

Hell, we have it on our smartphones too. Not as great as facetime, but just as well.

Ohh Skype I love Skype. It's much cheaper calling long distance with and everything else. You can call Skype to Skype for free but land lines and cellphones you have to pay for but it's still cheaper.

My mom has it set up on her computer for my grandmother to talk to her sisters who live in Illinois, California, and Arizona. It works fine, is free, and is relatively easy to set up. You can go to Wally World and but a web cam which has its own microphone included and it just sits on top of your monitor with a little clip thing. If you get a cheaper one picture quality won't be top notch but its still good enough for video calling, doesn't need to be HD in my opinion.

Well then imo there's no reason for Skype if you won't set up a camera, that's the whole point of it so you can see each other, more like a face to face conversation. I suppose you can still Skype without a camera or turn off the camera maybe but then you may as well use the cellphone during off peak times when it's cheap/free.

I used it when my brother lived overseas because it was free. Recently I Skyped with him in the U.S. so I could see how big my niece is getting. (One of her first words was 'kitty' so she thought it was great when I put the cat in front of the camera.) I've only used it for video chat, but if you are looking to save money for Skype to Skype talk instead of phone conversations, it would be good for that, too.
