Default The sims 3 for pc

So I am new to this game and picked up the sims 3 deluxe the other day, it came with the base sims 3 game and also the expansion pack called " ambitions". So I get home load up the base game then the expansion, when I put the base game cd in my pc tells me to put the expansion cd in instead every time I play. So my question is am I missing any of the base game when I play? Because that would suck if I am not getting to play a whole potion of the game.
