Please do not lump all teachers together as Marxist or spineless. Threatening or even calling a lawyer is meaningless if a teacher has done nothing wrong. In the case listed above where the teacher is making comments about a shirt, all he has to do is call and ask what is indeed going on. This year we had a parent call the Principal (without even contacting the teacher of course) because a History teacher supposedly said "cum sucking Indians" in class. It turned out that the teacher was teaching about Tecumseh and the child was not paying attention. We have parents blow things out of proportion all the time. This teacher contacted a lawyer and threatened to sue the parent for defamation because she was running her mouth. She definitely changed her tune and wrote a letter of apology to him and the administration. Teachers are not the enemy regardless of what many believe. In terms of the OP, this whole thing could have been avoided if the child did not use a school computer for personal use. I (as a teacher) had to ask permission to put a picture of me and my husband on my school issued computer as a screen saver. It is not my property and I am not allowed to put anything on it that is not related to school. Yes, it could be handled differently but the parents are using publicity in a negative way and I think it's shameful. Also, there is no tenure in my State and I am not a Union member so I am just looking at facts here.

Zombiegirl you are so right, my mom is a career teacher, elementary school. She deals with a lot of stupidity from parents and has had to use those 6 words many times. It irritates me when people assume all teachers are the same.

Maybe but what are the "good" teachers doing to change their image? I never see any of the Non Union teachers speaking out against these abuses.

What would you recommend they do? Call the news and say that the boy that should not have been using the school computer for personal use not be in trouble? I fight battles worth fighting like smaller class sizes for my students or better conditions for my students. This issue shouldn't even be on the news. If I use my work computer for personal things while at school there would be a consequence. How much do you want to bet these parents will be trying to sue for money? This type of crap is why I don't watch the local news. Example: we had a girl a few years back who was a huge bully and was constantly suspended for picking on kids. One day a group of kids kicked her butt after school. Her Mom called the news and a huge story ran about her poor daughter and how she was bullied. It was sickening. Nothing came of it, but you can't believe everything you see on the news because it doesn't give all of the info. I believe less than 50% of what I see on TV. My question for this story is why was the boy not doing his school work? If he was doing that instead of worrying about a screensaver of any type, there wouldn't be an issue.

The problem is that good teachers are very few.

Very untrue. Just as people feel that guns are bad and we know that 99.9% of gun owners are law abiding citizens that will never use their guns to commit crimes, most teachers are great and bust their butts and give of their own time for their students. It's just that for some reason people focus on that one negative thing they read etc. People are free to believe what they want. I'm just glad that those that need to, know the truth.

I am talking about National political issues. The Teachers Union is the leader in gun control. Teachers and Public schools pander to liberal politics and hid behind the Leftest agendas. The move to reeducate children to a socialist mindset.
Why are the good teachers hiding under their desk.

Well as you know I have no part of our teacher Union. I am an island amongst myself when it comes to that. I am very outspoken in our District when it comes to many issues because a lot of teachers are afraid. I figure that I properly do my job so I should be able to speak up and say what I'd like (though things usually don't change).

That opinion is not from one article I have read, it is from 17 years of my
own education and with dealing with putting 2 sons through public school,
I have to devote a great deal of time unprograming the leftist agenda from
my sons.

For example, my now 13 year old coming home from third grade asking my
why white people hate black people and why are we so mean to them...

Same kid this year comes home and tells me about how his reading teacher
did not realize that the war of 1812 had major land battles and he had to
explain and show her in a History book that the war of 1812 had land
battles...

Or when we re-arranged our schools from community center to grade
centers one of my kids teachers stated at a parent teacher conference that
they knew the "Bonfield" kids would be behind. And she was correct.

My son's Algebra teacher at the beginning of the year was not handing back
graded homework until after the unit test. So how are the kid to know what
to study for the test. I had a few words of prayer with that teacher, my kid
now has his homework back no later than 2 days after it is turned in, same
teacher also has marked numerous problems wrong this year that I have
shown his error on and he corrected for the class. Because when I find
these errors I email them to the other parents I know in my sons class.
I do believe he, the teacher, will be glad when this year is over. I have met
him and would call him a slacker.

I would think it is safe to say that half of the public school teachers today,
from my personal experience with 4 different school districts and 2
Universities and one Community College. were evaluated as private sector
employees are evaluated at least half of them would loose their jobs.

Their own time, I just love that, you do have a sense of humor... I will
remember that next time I am working on a customer report or Powerpoint
Presentation at 11PM at night or on the week end or at one of my sons
sporting events.

Time to put on the big girl pants adults do work outside of your "9 to 5"
dilusion. Consistantly the only job I have ever seen put in just their hours
and go home are government workers.
