Rules is rules
Don’t Bend The Rules Not For Anything
Good news: It was a normal day in Sharon Springs , KS, when a Union Pacific crew boarded a loaded coal train for the long trek to Salina .
The Bad news: Just a few miles into the trip a wheel bearing became overheated and melted, letting a metal support drop down and grind on the rail, creating white hot molten metal droppings spewing down to the rail.
The Good news: A very alert crew noticed smoke about halfway back in the train and immediately stopped the train in compliance with the rules.
The Bad news: The train stopped with the hot wheel over a wooden bridge with creosote ties and trusses.
The crew tried to explain to higher-ups but were instructed not to move the train!
Don't let common sense get in the way of a good disaster!
They were instructed “The Rules” prohibit moving the train when a part is defective!

I've seen that and love it when the "bosses" have no clue as to the unintended consequences of their "rules".
I have been known to follow their rules to the letter just to make a point how stupid their rules are.

Yep, you can tell them until you are blue in the face.
Sometimes, you just gotta show'em

Absolutely brilliant management decision.

The bosses are still going to try to make it look like it's the crew's fault.
Boss: Why didn't you tell me you were on a wooden bridge?
Crew: We did but you made us stop the train anyway.
Boss: Well you didn't tell me that fire can burn things, especially wood!
Crew: No offense, but with all due respect, go **** yourself.
Boss: *Cries*

The body parts were in a heated argument as who should be boss.
The brain thought it should be boss because it does all the thinking.
The heart thought it should be boss because it pump the blood vital for life.
The arms thought they should be boss because they moved the food to the mouth and supplied the body with nourishment.
The a$$hole said it should be boss and the rest of the body parts just laugh. So the a$$hole quit working and the rest of the body parts could not function properly. Moral of the story, you don't have to be a brain to be a boss, just an a$$hole.

My guess is the bosses were thinking with their wallets only.
Crew follows rules = insurance pays = possible small loss or possible small gain depending on insurance payment to value of train.
Crew does something that violates rules= no insurance = possible massive loss, possible break even.
I just hope the taxpayers are not stuck with the replacement bridge costs.
It would be nice if common sense exempted you from liability it would save lives and billions of dollars.
