RIP U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon
James Arness has passed away at the age of 88. He had the longest running dramatic series (20 year) run in television until Law & Order tied it. And the longest running character until Kelsey Grammar tied with his Frasier character (Cheers & Frasier combined).

Rest In Peace, James! A true hero to the end. This is a sad day for me.

He will be greatly missed. I watched Gunsmoke all the time as a kid and still watch it on Sat/TV to this day.

I am an old western fan. and have time swithced and watched all of the half hour Gunsmoke episodes that I watched religiously as a kid. Now I have see all the ones that have been on color, and am looking for the black and white hour long ones that started in 1960.
James Arness was a very entertaining western actor. It was a good genre that does not get any airtime today on tv.

A station here in the la area is showing both the half hour black and white shows, which I prefer.
And the hour long color shows.

And let's not forget his service in WWII.
