Naval aviation is still incredibly dangerous, and these guys were effectively test-driving the program. Rules governing firefighting, ordnance safety, aircraft movement, flight doctrine, PPE,..... Hell, everything to do with operating a sea-going airfield were written based on the experiences, both positive and negative, of the folks in movies like this one.
I can't watch old military footage without feeling a gigantic debt of gratitude for the people who went before and passed their lessons on to their reliefs.
