I love listening to both forms of music. Sadly, though, Mrs buckhuntr finds such high-pitched tones distressing to her ears.

one of the guys at work said he thought the instruments were the same but different bows were used to get a different sound when they were played.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like this.

Not a different bow but a different bridge that holds the strings raised off the instrument. That helps single out the notes but the sound difference is what the instrument is made of as the sound is made by the shape, style and materials used to make the instrument. Such as an acoustic guitar vs. an electric guitar.

A good friend of mine was studying music many years ago- he can play many, many instruments but seems to prefer guitars- and at one point the conservatory was having Eddie Van Halen (or is it Alex? Anyhoo the one who plays guitar) come to talk and play. My buddy was setting up the studio and was very excited because he wanted to learn what Van Halen did in order to get that distinctive Van Halen "sound" out of his guitar.

Van Halen arrived a few minutes early, walked into the studio and said Hi to everybody, grabbed my buddy's guitar and after doing the minor tuning everybody does started riffing som Van Halen.

There was absolutely nothing "special" about the instrument. It was 100% the player. Now, mind you, there are some special guitars )like Willy Nelson's that has a hole in it) that are "special", but even old Willy can play with that instinctive sound he has with other guitars. I have seen him do it.
