My personal safety is my concern, that is a large part of all of the ccw argument. Seat belts and helmet laws fall into the same category in my opinion.
We could argue this until doomsday and all we would accomplish is to turn this political and ruin a good thread without convincing each other.
Why I am a proponent of mandatory helmet laws: If you crash and get seriously injured they will be transported by an ambulance to a hospital, and treated. If the costs exceed their insurance, the state ends up footing the bill. If you survive the injuries and end up disabled, you are now on Social Security, and Medicaid. If your in your early twenties, the state could end up spending a million dollars or more.
In my mind people need to take personal responsibility for the consequences of their actions. So, if you elect to ride with out a helmet, this should be a defacto DNR order. We don't do anything beyond basic first aid at the site. No transport to an ER, we just let you suffer the consequences of your decision and die. This minimizes the financial impact to society of your poor decision.
