I don't have a spare key to my car. I bought it used and it came with only one key. And I've been too cheap to pay for another key to be made since it has a chip in it. I may just change my thinking on that.

Winds, you can have a non-chipped key cut for your car that will open the doors and trunk, and even cycle the ignition switch, but it will not start the car. Much cheaper that way and prevents somebody from stealing your car if they find it. If the locksmith says they can't do it or it won't work, go to another locksmith. They are wrong.

Vikingdad is 100 % correct. a new key without the chip will not crank the vehicle, but if you hadlocked the keys in the car or the trunk, that spare key would have opened them. the only place to get another chipped key is the dealership. they can vary in price.

Not true. They are widely available in the aftermarket these days. When I worked at the dealer they ran about $40 for a chipped key and about $10 for a non-chipped key. Prices probably will vary depending on your location.

Are you positive the key is chipped? My Mom locked the keys in my Dad's Duramax once and we called the closest dealership, they said they would cut us a new key from the VIN but it would only open the door, not start the truck because it was chipped. We use it as a spare and it starts the truck.

yesterday while driving we came across a bunch of bikers on a poker/fun run. they had a stop sign, we had the right of way on a 2 lane 65 mph highway. the first group pulled out with plenty of room & got up to speed quickly, the next 20 or so bikes blew the stop sign & didn't seem to care that in front of us, there was an 18 wheeler barreling down on them at 65 (he had the right of way, they didn't). the bikes kept coming forcing the 18 wheeler to stop on the highway to keep from plowing into them. he laid on the horn for probably 10 solid seconds.

finally some sensible bikers actually obeyed the stop sign & let the traffic get back to speed. why do 20 or 30 sh*theads have to give the rest of us responsible bikers a bad name? I suppose it's the same type of issue with us gun owners....

Maybe the chipped key is in close enough proximity to get the RF signal picked up by the receiver? That will happen.

Besides, who the Hell would want to steal a Duramax anyhow?

sad, but true. yes it happens in the gun world as well.

it's always a very small percentage that gives the overall majority the blackeye. everyone else will remember the idiots and jerks, but not those who strive hard to represent a group in a positive manner.
