I make them cover their ears unless im shooting a 22 rifle , every now and then I will shoot a 9mm but thats as loud as I want to go with them around even if they do cover their ears .
Most of the time I will just pop one or two off in the swamp to make the dogs go away , they will spend about 10 min looking for the bullet

My kids and everybody I shoot with wear proper ear protection any time we shoot or have any other sort of loud noise environment. I am stone deaf in one ear and 60%-75% deaf in the other one with severe tinnitus. All of the damage in my "good" ear is due to loud noise exposure. Some of that was due to my parents failing to teach me to use hearing protection when I was a kid when using or around construction power tools, chainsaws, log splitters, etc., etc..

My kids carry those foam roll-up foam earplugs everywhere they go and they use them any time they think noise levels might get too loud.

I think .22 rimfire runs about 80db or louder. Hearing damage starts at around 65db? This is from memory so don'thold me to those numbers. Suffice it to say that .22 will cause damage- especially sustained fire. 9mm will cause damage, even just a shot or two in some cases.

The guys I work with always tease me about wearing ear plugs, I just tell them I don't wanna be deaf like them when I get old.
