Wait, I know why he didn't post it. He doesn't want to have to explain why he was reading that online magazine.
So, you tell on him.....

This is the reason I like my IH's... Everything is out in the open, you dont have to take everything apart just to get to what needs fixed.

I try to get things done as quickly as I can. I get paid hourly now but I know most the dealers pay flat rate.

Yeah, I was home, if I had been at work I would have told the guy to stop at the flying j down the road and get fuel.

Flat rate is a little different, you can't stop the clock and you don't want to take your time. If you do a 2 hour job in three hours, you still get paid for 2 if you do it in an hour you get paid for 2 and you can move on to the next job.

Trucks are usually that way. They're getting worse though.
Internationals and freightliners are the worst though.

ROFL........I wasn't talking about getting paid flat rate for working on the truck. I was talking about using the stop button in the elevator for something else.

But you can't make any money by pressing the stop button. Speed is money turnin wrenches. Not so much in an elevator though😅😷

This is true. The faster you are the more money you can make. I need to work on that. I'm getting better though.

Take your time Cinder. Speed comes with experience (well as a tech it does). As far as the elevator stuff goes, well that's for y'all to figure out!

The younger mechanics and apprentices would always be hourly. I would get two or three of them and serve as their mentor, and I would get paid their flat rate (for PDI's, oil changes, that sort of thing) and as I saw their skills improving I would give them more difficult jobs. If they screwed up I would have to fix their screw-ups on my time. I just made sure they didn't screw up.

It was always a fun time when we had a "round table" storytime.

Be careful transitioning to flat rate though. You usually have a drop in pay at first, and there is a tendency to rush things which never works out well. A lot of mechanics wash out at that point.
