i agree with that C3. dressing in a Brooks Brothers suit for an interview for a heavy equipment technician's job would probably get you a few giggles!

but irregardless of the job or the attire for the interview, what's more important is you appearance. hair combed and trimmed if needed. beard or mustache trimmed neatly if you have them. clothes neatly pressed and not wrinkled. fingernails clipped and clean. little details such as these can make a difference. tells a potential employer a lot about you and your work ethics.

I wore a black pencil skirt nylons and heels to my job interview.... I don't think anyone laughed.

I believe you wear a "uniform". There is a difference between a uniform and a suit- and formal dress uniform.

I worked as a mechanic for many years and we had to wear a shop uniform, basically slacks, collared shirt with your name and the shop name on it, black steel toe shop footwear. We all had the same outfits, it was uniform.

I was chosen to mentor young potential mechanics who were going to a trade school and were given the opportunity to enter our program. I was unable to attend the selection process one time so my manager went and selected the student. He was wearing a suit and tie, clean cut, all of that, but when he showed up for work the first day he was wearing his pants down around his ass with no belt (he claimed one was not provided). Given that I had to make an effort, and that I was remiss in my duty to make the selection myself, I gave it all of my efforts to make things work. It took a week before this kid would not drop his pants down whenever he left my immediate custody- this after on his first day I provided him with a belt, then on the second day I cut it short so that he could not let it out, so he would take it off. Anyhow, we finally got past that. But in the end he did not work out. His work ethic was just not up to par. He misrepresented himself to my manager and then showed up and did not wear his uniform in a uniform way. Bad news.

I will show up to interviews in clean jeans and a clean button-down work shirt. It is appropriate for what I do. I don't own a tie. If invited to a tie-only dinner or establishment I will say up front that I will not wear a tie and they either make an exception or I will decline the invitation.

Neckties just cut off circulation tot he brain.

When my son had to wear a tie for certain classes, we had to ask the neighbor to teach us how to tie a tie. We didn't know. LOL

Ironically I can tie one. I just don't own any.
