I never liked puppies, too dumb; now a kitten, that's a little fuzzy ball of cute wrapped around a psychopathic center just waiting to come out to play. Cats rock!
Young snakes are no fun, even the constrictors bite everything that gets close, because they are mother nature's hot dogs, easy food for most any critter. You need to buy them young though; they take forever to condition/train.
