Actually you would need a presser cooker.

You always throw away the first shot ( two double shots to be safe). It is straight methanal.

Can you tell me why? I think I may know, but I'm finding it hard to use words for it.

To get more evaporation I guess. But wouldn't that get you water vapor in your evap line. Alcohol evaps at 170 degrees. iirc

No, you need to keep the temperature of what you are distilling between the boiling point of alcohol and the boiling point of water. Cooling and condensing the steam concentrates the alcohol.

Now, does grain alcohol have any anesthetic properties?

Just trying to figure out other uses besides getting drunk as a skunk...

I know it can be used as a fuel, and in fact, in many places you can get a license to make it as a fuel, with an additive that makes it inedible.

If I wanted transportation that ran on grain, I'd get a horse...

Ethyl alcohol (ethanol, or grain, or shine) has an antiseptic property. Limited use as a CNS depressant (knock you out).

Now, not that I have any first hand knowledge of illicit distilling of spirits-that is against the law, and i am a law abiding person. Have a bit of paper called a security cleance that says so. However, what I have HEARD.....

The first ounce or two that comes from the condenser is known as the foreshot- the small amount of methanol that is produced by fermentation will be in that- since methanol evaporates at a lower temp than ethanol.

The tailings (end of the run) will contain cetyl alcohol, aka fusel oil or fusel alcohol. This can be (when cooled in pure form) a white waxy substance. Fusel is a German term that means "bad whiskey".

Accidental contamination usually comes from the equipment. There can be NO lead in any of the solder- pure tin is used on copper. There have been people that have used truck radiators as a condenser- the alcohol reacts with lead at higher temps, and produces lead acetate. Sweet taste, system poison. Can produce blindness, brain damage, kidneys, reproductive harm, etc.

A bit of mountain lore was to take a spoon full of shine, and light it. Blue flame, good shine. Yellow flame, not as good. Red flame- poison. "Lead burns red and makes you dead" Flame test will NOT reveal methanol.

Good quality stills today are made of stainless steel. Shine was made from corn or other grain. You can also make brandy by distilling fermented fruit- apples, grapes, pears, blackberries, peaches- anything with a high sugar content. Or make shine and add fruit to it after it is distilled.

Or so I have heard.

Speaking of "switches" on another thread reminded me of this story a co-worker told me a while ago.

When she and her sister were kids, if they misbehaved they had to go out and find the 'switch' which their parents would hit them with. One time her sister did something to anger her parents and she was told to get a switch. It was summer and they were outside at the time. Soon enough, the little girl comes around the corner of the house dragging a HUGE branch which she could barely drag. My co-worker said she thought to herself, 'They are going to kill her with that switch.' What the little girl dragging the branch new was that it was too heavy to lift and spank her with. Everyone got to laughing so hard she never did get whupped that day.

Smart kid.
