My Grandma had a can with a perforated lid made especially for filtering the big bits out of the bacon grease. She also used it for everything. Especially greasing the cornbread skillet.

Why is the end of a tape measure loose? Is it to compensate for the end piece thickness and if so then why do some move a good 1/8th inch?

Letting it snap back will make it more loose. Put your finger in between the end and body when letting it back, more slowly.

Careful though .... the edge of a tape measure will slice your finger open!! Taoe measures aren't as accurate as it gets. I have seen some finish carpenters use folding rulers for finer measurements but they look like a pain in the butt

Yes, that is why. And as mentioned they get worn from slamming back into the case.

Some end pieces are flat, some are curved slightly to stiffen them. Don't look at just the metal thickness. If you look at the edge of a curved end piece in the position of a smile, the movement would have to be enough to cover from the top edge of the corners of the smile to the bottom of the middle. That could be 1/8".
