Except for the "dead languages" such as Latin.

I missed most of this conversation, but here are my two cent's worth.

Language is at its core the ability to communicate with one another. As long as that is possible then all variations of words, even made up ones, are "real words". Even the language of texting is now a part of our common lexicon even if those strings of letters don't appear in our contemporary dictionaries.

I make a point of attempting to assimilate any and every language or dialect I come across into my own toolbox of language. I find that it becomes easier for me to understand people when I do this. It also makes for some very interesting conversations which more often than not develop into friendships. Some are easier than others though.

Try on Boontling for a regional dialect that is tough to learn.

There have been what I call "occupational colloquialisms"- terminology that is unique to a particular occupation, craft or group. Perfectly good words that mean little to folks that do not do that work.

If you work in heavy construction, you know what a rodbuster is (one that ties steel reinforcing rod with wire). Working with concrete, if I ask you about the slump, and how's the breaks?- you would know I mean the relative fluidity of fresh poured concrete, and the lab results from a destructive crush test of a cured concrete test cylinder.

And that applies to just about every job out there- languages within languages. Medical, farming, mining, watermen, food service, hotels, mechanics, pilots, military.

Think about the expression we use right here, every day- that would be Greek to folks that are not gun buffs. While I'm working on a new build in Blackout that I am hoping will get me MOA.

The English language was carefully, carefully cobbled together by 3 blind dudes and a German dictionary.

I am convinced that the German language only has about 5000 words. Any more complex concept is covered by "simply" saying the definition of the concept as all one word with no spaces.

The problem with the word Y'all, is people think its the contraction of "you" and "all". But it comes from when language had singular and plural forms. When speaking to a single person you used "Thou" and to a group it was "Ye all"

Y'all is the contraction of the old English "Ye all"

Hey C3, I live out in the "Bundok"s....
