Mostly technique (if you are talking handguns).
Look at a carpenter's hammer. The more handle there is above your hand, the more swing is available. The less handle between the peen and your hand, the less swing is available.
You want swing with a hammer, but not with a handgun.
Grab it as high as you can (even allow some of the gun to push in on the web of your hand). Have the barrel in line with the forearm so the forearm absorbs some of the recoil. Set your feet correctly. Lean into the firearm and let your body absorb the recoil (how many youtubes have you seen where the girl is leaning back while trying to fire a firearm?)
