What kind of laptop are ya buying Winds? By the way, you're computer will find your router, but like said above, set up a password for it so the nasty neighbors won't be stealing your bandwidth. Then you just simply type the security code into your computer and you're good to go from then on out. The neighbors are out of luck though.

Random thought on this subject, one of my neighbors has a name for his wireless system that is at the least very crude. I had to put a block on my daughters laptop before she saw it. Not sure which neighbor it is, but I have an idea.

You can block SSID's from showing up? Didn't know that. Can't imagine how bad it must have been to have to resort to that

To be honest, I don't know how I did it. I am nearly computer illiterate. Her laptop is probably 5 or 6 years old, it was my dads old one. Often it looses the connection and I have to reconnect to the wireless router and that network doesn't show up now.

Winds,
You can do it. And as stated if you get in a bind it is always fixable. I have a wireless router that is my DSL modem, and it works well (though it is getting old and dropping out sometimes these days).

Name your wireless connection something that will keep your neighbors guessing as to who it is. Like HomelandSecurityStation#3546. Or FBITerroristInvestigation. .

Be sure to have a good security code that can't be easily guessed, this should have both upper and lower case letters and numerals as well. It should be easy for you to remember too, though the more random it is the more secure it is.

One of my younger co-workers bought an HP lap top. It didn't have the power he thought it would have and it doesn't do what he wanted it to do. He bought an Acer with more power with his income tax return money and is selling me his less than a year old HP to me for $100. Since I only browse the internet, go on forums, facebook, email, etc., I'm sure it will be a great computer for me.

So you say my computer will find the router by itself? Okay.

Scary? I must have been downright crazy. Looking back, I can't believe I did that. Rented a gas chainsaw. Never even held a chainsaw before, and took down three poplar trees. I could have been a Darwin award winner.
