That's one of those things that goes way back to old English. I don't know exactly how, or what it means. Kinda like how two horses asses put a man in space. That's a long story...

Thanks but I understand physics I think I can handle 8th grade science. There is no need to insult my intelligence.

Hindsight is 20/20, and better to have tried and failed, than to not have tried at all.

Why's that? No one said that density caused an object to become heavier, only feel heavier.

Why are Springfields, Garands, and 1911s so expensive compared to Mausers, Mosins, Enfields, ect that have to be imported?

Because they are American. I would much rather own a piece of American history than Russian history.

Because they really are that much better.... I used to that guy who wonder why anybody spent what they did on M1's or 1903's, when you can get a SKS or a Mosin cheap...

I have some people telling me my M39 is better than my '03.... Personally I dont see it, Its way better than a Russian one, but still has the awful Mosin bolt (Sorry, I just dont like the design) The '03 operates smoother, feels more comfortable, and just looks nicer... IMO

Seriously, a 1911 vs. any other military pistol?

Thats a tough one. A quick run around the inter-webs found several references to blue barrels (storage) and a couple stating that still "bl" meant barrels but the other b was added as a plural meaning. Because bls was taken? ...i guess. In most of those cases the firearms explanation was that it "somehow" transferred to firearms. Sorry . I find that un acceptable....and stupid.

Another forum brought up the same question and someone surmised that bbl could mean bored barrel length. This actually makes some sense and it can be traced back to the navy's original use of the word caliber to mean the bore to barrel length ratio of the ships guns. In small arms, caliber obviously means something different, so I can see the "bore to barrel length" sticking around as bbl or "bored barrel length" because the term "caliber" is taken to mean the size of the bore exclusively.

This is of course my own theory. I haven't yet found any way to back it up.

I've seen it in reference to carburetors too, in catalogues and stuff

Oops, sorry that was not my intent. It was meant to be a humorous dig, but came out wrong. I apologize and will go stand in the corner .
