I don't think the large pile of leaves would have helped him very much.

What exactly is cosmoline? How can you tell if it's on a rifle? I think, by reading about it here, that it's put on a gun to keep it from rusting during long term storage. Is it only military rifles that have this? How is it applied?

Looks like brown snot, and 10X harder to wipe off.
Applied.......smeared on. (The messier the better. Oh yea, the more the better!)

Preservative grease. Typically, large drums of it are heated until it is runny and the guns are dipped into the vats. Guns are removed and cosmoline dries.

Wow, so it's in every little part of the gun?

Yep. It is intended to get anywhere water could find a home, to keep the water from causing any rust. They even soak the stocks.

Imagine, if you would, a large tank of warm, liquid, light brown Crisco shortening. Take a rifle, remove bolt, then drown your rifle. Hold it under until struggles and bubbles cease. Remove from tank, hang. As the cosmoline cools, it congeals. Rifle now enters a state of suspended animation that can last 10-100 years. I just de-cosmoed a Russian Moisin Nagant wearing a manufactured date of 1926.
There are over 2 dozen ways of getting the crap OUT (not off, OUT) of a rifle. Most involve profanity, and speculating about the mother of the person that applied it.

Interesting. If I ever acquire a rifle that has cosmoline in/on it, I'll be sure to send it to you.

The two best definitions of cosmoline I've ever heard.

I just woke up to go to church with my parents and thought I'd check FireArmsTalk. com. I wonder if my rifle from Gander Mountain will have cosmoline on it? Do all rifles have that?
