No, I mean like... Why is the barrel covered almost to the muzzle? Unlike sporting guns that just have a small forestock leaving a majority of the barrel exposed?

My guess, because of the abuse in battle the rifle would take.

also possible. when in the heat of battle, it may be more likely to grab aany part of the rifle if you were running and fell or crawling. perhaps it was an extra measure to prevent burns to the hand..

It really depends on how it was stored, it won't hurt you. You can take a sip if not good throw it away.

Re: Heat shield on military style rifle- Barrel gets HOT with prolonged fire. Military rifles have bayonets. Want to grab the front of a really hot rifle?
