As a general rule I go by the description. I would describe the one in PC167's post to be a carbine- which to me is a short rifle rather than a long pistol.

The Uzi I shot looked much like this one. I remember the owning saying the barrel couldn't be shorter than a specific number of inches. It was definitely a rifle of some sort. I Googled Uzi and the one I shot didn't look anything like those pistols.

Uzi's are sub-machine guns when full auto and semi auto pdw's when semi auto.

As far at the ATF is concerned, that is a rifle. The barrel cannot legally be under 16" unless you go through the process of getting a Class III tax stamp for a short barreled rifle. After that, it could be as short as you want.
