I think the flag should be left as it is. I would say it should be okay for the group that is representing the death of their own, to supply a smaller group designated flag if they so choose. It then could be buried with the casket, or folded and given to a survivor just as the flag of the U.S.A. is.

I voted yes if not to deface it. My rational is to change it if we add another state. not sure what or how they would make a flag with 51 stars.

the top one would be the official 51 state flag designed by the Army Institute of Heraldry, and the bottom is the proposed flag by the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico. I like the top one because it keeps in tradition of our current flag. But the bottom one is interesting because when I look at the center star there is an optical illusion where a 5 armed star forms.

I too served our country and feel the flag should remain the same, unless we for some reason add another state. The flag i f i remember right breaks down as follows.

The stars represent the individual states of the union, The royal blue stands for loyalty, white for courage and red for the blood of all those who have fallen for this country and who will continue to fall. There are 13 strips which stand for the origonal 13 colonies. You can find out more by looking it up on www.answers.com
If i am mistaken or you have something to add please do.

I don't see the 5-armed star in the second one but I do see this:

It's the first thing that popped out at me when I first saw the picture. Not something I'd want to see on a U.S. flag representing 51 states. If it happens, I'd rather see the first "modification" to the star field.

I agree with keeping the flag unchanged. I didn't notice the piece symbol until you brought it up. I hate that thing. I saw a bumper sticker with a picture of one. Underneath it said "Footprint of the great American Chicken!"

Quick modification using paint to show what I saw.

A HUGE plus one! Best opinion I have read on the subject.

There is nothing more beautiful than US flag. I would die for it, literally. If I would have done what I wanted and go to embassy duty, and we were being overrun, I would risk my life to secure the flag from the roof top. Think of the scene in Rules of Engegement when Samuel L Jackson runs back to grab the flag.

“This flag, which we honor and under which we serve,
is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought
and purpose as a nation...”
- President Woodrow Wilson

I AM THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
By Howard Schnauber

I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is "Old Glory".
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over institutions of learning.
I stand guard with power in the world.
Look up and see me.

I stand for peace, honor, truth and justice.
I stand for freedom.
I am confident.
I am arrogant.
I am proud.

When I am flown with my fellow banners,
My head is a little higher,
My colors a little truer.

I bow to no one!
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped -- I am saluted.
I am loved -- I am revered.
I am respected -- and I am feared.

I have fought in every battle of every war
for more then 200 years.
I was flown at Valley Forge, Gettysburg,
Shiloh and Appomattox.
I was there at San Juan Hill,
the trenches of France,
in the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome
and the beaches of Normandy, Guam,
Okinawa, Korea, and Vietnam.
I was there. I led my troops.
I was dirty, battle-weary and tired,
but my soldiers cheered me
And I was proud.

I have been burned, torn and trampled
on the streets of countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.

I have been soiled upon, burned, torn
and trampled on the streets of my country.
And when it's by those whom I've served in battle -- it hurts.
But I shall overcome -- for I am strong.

I have slipped the bonds of Earth
and stood watch over the uncharted frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have borne silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hours are yet to come.

When I am torn into strips
and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I am flown at half-mast to honor my soldier,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving parent at the grave of their fallen son or daughter,
I am proud.

MY NAME IS "OLD GLORY".
LONG MAY I WAVE.
DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN,
LONG MAY I WAVE.
