Yeah I've had guys come in my shop lookin for work and they like to throw that ase cert out like its there golden ticket. You wouldn't believe how many guys I've seen that were ase certified and didn't know a wrench from a screwdriver (ok maybe that's a bit exagerated, but not much). I think it is something good to have but it really doesnt prove much to me. Everytime I hire someone I work them for a week or two to see what they know before I put them on payroll.

Hey man, a 30-90 day probationary period is the norm these days.

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

You can tell a lot about how they present themselves and their certs. Confidence in oneself is good, false confidence in your certifications is a red flag. All my certifications did for me was get me better pay, I got all of my jobs myself. While I worked for Acura/Honda dealerships they had these "training tests" that were totally useless insofar as making a person a better mechanic. But when you get 100% of your tests updated it was worth a couple of bucks an hour pay bump.

That's exactly how i think of them too. Good for expanding your pay grade but not what gets you in the door. And yes trip, a probationary period is SOP.

Oh he does. I'm definitely paying for my raising. He usually does something mischievous and them acts all sweet and cuddly to stay out of trouble. Not quite 2 and he can already play the system.
