Always keep boxes for the young ones. Even our 7 year old still has fun with them. He's constantly building ships, forts, spaceships, barracks etc for his GI Joes.

When my boys were very young (like 1-3 years old) my best friend, who is childless, gave them one of the Best. Gifts. Ever., it was actually a box full of...... boxes, some assembly required. There were a couple of dozen flat pieces of cardboard that were die-cut to make a brick, with some brick graphics printed on one side. Since my buddy is the sort of guy who picks up something on the way to the party they were still flat, so we had a great time folding them up into bricks, and then the boys played with them for years afterwards. As a matter of fact, the boys are 17 and 15 years old now and these brick-boxes are still in their bedroom, albeit very well worn. I just now took the pic.

My oldest son said if he ever has kids he's not buying them toys. He's just going to give them cardboard boxes and empty water bottles.

We had those very same cardboard brick boxes. They were well used. There was also a appliance store in town and I would often bring home a refrigerator box or an stove box. Those lasted for a couple weeks in the backyard.

My neighbor used to have those, we built a fort around my little sister once, told her if she tried to get out they'd fall and kill her. I wasn't a very nice sister... But she's not the brightest crayon in the box....

I swear those are the best children's gift ever! Cheap as all get out and they provide years and years of good fun. Where do you find them these days?
