I get a real kick out of the guys that run high octane in a motor designed to run regular.

A lot of times they kill their performance, decrease their engine life, and shoot their mileage straight to hell.

My first RUNNING truck, a '65 f100, I put high octane in it thinking it would run better. WRONG!!! It took cheap gas, plus a lead substitute to make it run good.

My car will only run on 91+ I run pure gas anytime I can. And it's a stock Nissan 350 Nismo. On lower grade fuel it pings and runs like junk. I've never run it in mine but I have a friend that does his it can't be good for it.

Yeah, it definitely isn't. High compression engines will pre-ignite with low octane, that's what the pinging is. That will eventually lead to knocking and then you're screwed.

C3 may have to correct me on this but I believe octane raises the flash point of gasoline so it doesn't ignite from the heat caused by compression, which is why diesel fuel doesn't have octane.... At least that's how I understand it.

That which does not kill me had better run pretty damn fast.

Got a good piece of steel a few weeks ago. I'm designing a few knives in my head, but my son designed this one himself, I supplied the labor. The edge will be left rounded and unsharpened, and the handle will be left semi unfinished. He can sharpen it and finish the final dressing of the handle as he gets older.

It has 4 copper pins down the center of the handle, and near the pommel, a copper tube to serve as a lanyard loop. The handle also narrows near the blade for forefinger and thumb purchase, but you can't tell because the wood is still unshaped as of now.

I'll post more as it comes together more.
My next one will be a dagger approximately the same size, but some slightly different shaping, for myself.

Octane is, literally, the resistance to knocking (and pinging). The higher the number the more resistant it is to knocking. Knocking is caused by pre-ignition due to a number of things but more commonly in high performance engines it is due to the elevated combustion chamber temperatures as a result of high compression. When knocking and pinging occurs it is actually causing physical damage to the engine, I have seen piston tops and combustion chambers (in the cylinder head) eroded through to the water jackets due to pre-ignition damage caused by too low of octane fuel being used.
