I went to a garage sell last week and happened upon an old, completely rusty jack plane made by Millers Falls (they made really good planes a long time ago). I have a soft spot for planes, and I enjoy restoring them, so I bought it. I paid $5 for it, and was on my way.
A little sandblasting here, a good buffing with a wire wheel there, a coat of engine enamel in certain places, and a good amount of elbow grease and sandpaper, and this is what I ended up with.
It has some pitting here and there from the rust, but that just adds character to this old workhorse. I also chose to leave the handles as they were because the finish that was used is unique to this plane's year model (aka type). They used a orange/red varnish during certain years, so the handles helped me find out about when this plane was made.
This particular plane is a Millers Falls No. 14C Type 4. It was made between 1955 and 1966.
So, what is the value of this plane now? $20-$60. I'm not sure I want to sell it though.
