No wonder I didn't recognize it! Can you show us a proper 6 part towing lead? That is not one that I have in my knot arsenal.

I'm skeptical about whether or not the pin is, in fact, floating as the name implies....

Next time I use a 6 part I'll try to take a pic. The fin actually floats... It rides in a track in a wall, at a lock. This pin belongs to keokuk Iowa lock number 19. We use them to tie off the boat and barges to lock. Keokuk is normally around a 34-35 foot drop/raise if I'm not mistaken. The 6 parts give it strength.

Reasoning behind that being incorrect line, is that the top two parts, are overlapping the others, and therefore not properly slacked even with the other parts. This causes you to loose the strength of having 6 parts, leaving you with 4 parts instead. Not a weak line still, but 15 barges @ 1500 tons of cargo apiece alone and a boat surging hard into the line, you want 6 parts.

Also if two parts were to break. You would still have 4 parts holding you. Not in this case, and the surge would break a standard two part in a hurry. Making for a dangerous situation when your 30+ feet above the water level below, and 30 feet from hitting the gates.

Here is a picture from the same lock, northbound with 11 barges. The boat is 4 stories tall.....
