No they're not. Another name for them down here is "spreading adder". If there is a cool snake it is a hognose. They have several defense mechanisms. They spread like a cobra and hiss. Rattle their tail in dry leaves to mimic a rattlesnake, and play dead pretty good. Unfortunately, they don't have a defense for a twelve gauge.
