English is essentially a "patois" of German.
Meaning it is a gramatically simplified version of German with many foreign (non german) words added from other languages.
English split off from German about 1300 years ago, if memory serves.
However since the big re-writes of US + UK encyclopedias during and just after WW1 in a deliberate and conscious effort to de germanize the history of "the english speaking peoples" this "little" fact has been lost to most english speakers.
