Looks surviveable to me. Might have to trim the bark back to where it is still attached to the tree and paint it with latex paint to protect the cambium. It will heal in time. That's a nice specimen. Hate to see it cut down.

The tree service will make more money off of cutting it down and hauling it away. If that is what they recommend get another company to check it out. A responsible company will clean it up a bit (trim away the loose bark) and tell you to wait for a several months or a year to see what happens.

My wife is a public horticulture manager by trade. She most often knows more about this stuff than the people she calls.

Tribal drum, hollowed out from a tree. I've been meaning to bring it home but it's just so heavy, lol. It remains in my room on the ship 6,000 miles away. It is LOUD and gives several tones based on where you strike it.
