I've always called them locusts, maybe its a regional thing, but I believe cicada is the proper name. Those buggers live underground like 17 years or something, come out and get laid and leave their shells, then go underground again.

My niece collected about 2/3 cubic foot of those shells last year. As kids, we stuck them on peoples clothes, their legs were real pointy.

Locusts are just big grasshoppers. They do look like cicadas in some stages of their development though.

This is a locust:

That's what I always called a grasshopper, even though I know it is a locust. So what is a grasshopper?

Locusts are a type of grasshopper. I think it is mainly the behavior that sets them apart, that of swarming in the millions and eating everything in sight. Polite grasshoppers don't do that.

We always called those Locusts too. When I was a kid, I'd go around looking for those shells, and gather up as many as I could find.
