They are eating better. When spiders don't eat their bodies get all dessicated and small. When they are livin' large and eating catching the flies they get fatter. Like that black widow. She's one fat mama.
When I find a large orb weaver spider outside I sometimes will toss a few bugs into the web. If they get too many bugs to eat they will make a "pantry" and store them there. You will see some epic battles if you toss in a wasp or a hornet into a big spider web.
