Yes, but if you don't know how to use it it will be useless to you. Also, those old tube radios can be tempermental if they have been stored for a long time. You have to power them up slowly over the course of several days or even a week or so otherwise you can blow caps or tubes. I have a few old rigs but haven't used them. One is an old AM band Motorola R390A receiver and a Johnson Viking II transmitter. I also have a Hallicrafters transmitter from the '30's and a couple of others.

You really ought to try getting your license and doing it legally. The knowledge you gain is worth the time.

Yep, I should be able to hit palomar. But it's not really in escondido. If you look at a map, I'm near 15/78 interchange and palomar is northeast of me and over several large mountains. Now, if I had a good antenna(better than my dual-band mobile unit) I KNOW I could hit it. just need a little time

There are a bunch of repeaters down there. Shorty started the system in SoCal, so that is where most of them are. Take a look at the listings, probably one is an easy shot. I have only one near me and it is just a few miles line of sight from my house, but it always seems to have problems of one kind or another. I can usually receive off it just fine but people can't hear transmissions from it. It is WR6ABD on Loma Prieta (listed as San Jose).

Oh yeah, big time! I worked at an Acura dealer for several years and with the newer cars knowing RF was very helpful. I was a mechanic long before I became licensed though so I got it the other way around.

But how do you add an ellipses to morse code? It just is an S...
That's ok, when you're mad the ellipses make a sound like SSSSS (hissing)!
